Material as the deciding factor
Friday 18 September 2026 · 16:00 – 17:00 · Second floor
How does an idea grow into a successful design? Marc Th. van der Voorn takes you through his process: from the first sketch and the choice of material to form, detailing and production.
Using his own work, he shows how material is not only a practical choice but can be the factor that decides whether a design succeeds.

02Practice
Marc Th. van der Voorn is a product designer working hands-on and collaboratively, where material exploration and development are closely connected. His aim is to develop consumer products together with manufacturers and brands — objects that begin as singular experiments and open up into series.
03Why this maker, and where
For ECHO he focused on flexible connections: designs that shift depending on the specific piece of residual aluminium available. Each CandleSwitch is shaped by what the material allows.
It is the most domestic object in ECHO — a candleholder of structural aluminium offcuts combined with azobé, a dense tropical hardwood. It sits on a table. It holds a candle. The material that once carried current through a street pole now holds a flame.
Sales enquiries for every ECHO work are coordinated by Maaike Rabbinge, who initiated the collective — not by MADART Foundation. 100% of the sale proceeds go to the maker.
