Maurice Albert Jan

Maurice Albert Jan (1988) is self-taught, and works from the Plantage Doklaan in Amsterdam. He makes sculptural furniture and objects that balance solidity with refinement.

He draws from natural forms and material, and from craft and modernist influences. What the work is after is a question about placement rather than function: how far an object can shape its surroundings, rather than only serve them.

Maison d'Artiste asks what a maker's authority does once it enters a room built for living. Maurice Albert Jan's furniture does not announce itself as sculpture on approach — a bench, a desk, a mirror, a lamp — but each piece carries the same instinct for mass and taper found in older, unhurried craft.

Placed inside the sixth floor, his pieces test whether an object built to be lived with can still hold its own as a standalone form.
